Oppose Any and All Sanctions on ICC to Uphold Global Justice

To: Sen. Bennet, Sen. Hickenlooper, Rep. Crow, Pres. Biden

From: A verified voter in Littleton, CO

June 4

I am writing to express my concern regarding the proposed measures in H.R. 8282 and H. Res. 1269, which aim to impose sanctions on international legal bodies like the International Criminal Court (ICC). I urge you to oppose these measures, or any similar measures, and instead support international law, which serves to uphold global justice and enhances U.S. national interests. International law, including the work of bodies like the ICC, plays a crucial role in maintaining global stability and protecting human rights. The U.S. has long benefited from a rules-based international order, which has helped to foster peace, security, and economic growth worldwide. Supporting international legal institutions reinforces this order and aligns with our national values and interests. Sanctions against the ICC undermine these principles and send a message that the U.S. is willing to disregard international norms when they are inconvenient. Such actions could weaken global efforts to address war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. Moreover, these sanctions could alienate our allies and diminish our leadership on the world stage. Although the United States is not a member of the ICC, it is imperative that we do not interfere with their legal proceedings. Respecting the independence and integrity of international legal bodies is crucial for maintaining the credibility of international justice systems. Interference can set a dangerous precedent and erode the rule of law globally. According to the Brookings Institution, engaging constructively with international law and institutions supports U.S. strategic objectives by promoting stability and cooperation among nations. It also ensures that global governance mechanisms operate effectively, which is essential for addressing transnational challenges such as terrorism, climate change, and pandemics. I urge you to vote against H.R. 8282 and H. Res. 1269 or any similar legislation. Instead, please advocate for policies that strengthen international law and support institutions like the ICC. Doing so will not only uphold justice and human rights globally but also reinforce the international order that has long underpinned U.S. security and prosperity. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
