Oppose inclusion of Save Our Bacon Act in Farm Bill

To: Sen. Schumer, Rep. Riley, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in Ithaca, NY

May 7

I’m writing to urge you to oppose inclusion of the so-called “Save Our Bacon” (SOB) Act in the Farm Bill. This provision would undermine state authority by blocking states from setting standards on how animal products sold within their borders are produced. It would effectively gut voter-approved animal welfare laws like California’s Proposition 12 and Massachusetts’ Question 3, which passed with strong bipartisan public support. Millions of pigs are still confined in gestation crates so small they cannot turn around for months at a time. States should retain the right to decide whether products from these systems can be sold in their markets. I’m also concerned that this language would chill future progress on animal welfare standards and create barriers to innovation in alternative proteins and more humane food systems. Consumers increasingly want transparency, higher welfare standards, and access to alternatives. Congress should not preempt states from responding to those demands. The Supreme Court already upheld California’s law. Congress should not now override voters and strip states of their ability to regulate products sold within their own borders. Please oppose any Farm Bill that includes the SOB Act or similar language weakening state animal welfare protections. Thank you for your time and consideration
