I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Trump administration's national security strategy released this past Friday. This document represents a dangerous departure from American values and threatens our national security through the abandonment of our allies and partnerships.
The strategy's treatment of our European allies is particularly alarming. Rather than strengthening NATO, the document suggests certain European countries may not remain reliable allies and claims the continent faces "civilizational erasure." It openly encourages far-right political movements in Europe. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has already pushed back, noting that questions about freedom of expression are not part of alliance discussions. This approach undermines the transatlantic partnership that has been the cornerstone of American security for over 75 years.
The document's Western Hemisphere policy is equally troubling. The so-called "Trump Corollary" to the Monroe Doctrine calls for military strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats and considers military action in Venezuela. It advocates "targeted deployments to secure the border and defeat cartels, including where necessary the use of lethal force." This militarization of our hemisphere ignores diplomatic solutions and risks destabilizing our own region.
Democratic Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado correctly warned that this strategy is "catastrophic to America's standing in the world and a retreat from our alliances and partnerships." He stated that "The world will be a more dangerous place and Americans will be less safe if this plan moves forward."
I urge you to publicly oppose this national security strategy and work with colleagues to prevent its implementation. America's strength has always come from our alliances, our commitment to democratic values, and our moral leadership. This strategy abandons all three. Please stand up for the values that have made America a force for good in the world.
