As a constituent I'm writing today in opposition to IODA, KOSA, the SCREEN Act and the STOP CSAM Act. No one is arguing for children to be exploited or exposed to explicit content online. We all want our children to be safe. However that safety shouldn't sacrifice the First and Fourth Amendment rights of adults. The problem lies with how these bills are written. There are no safeguards, no exceptions, no protections for awful but lawful speech, and there's no way to enforce these bills without overreach. Minors may well be caught in the web these bills will spread, rather than being protected. Data breaches and identity theft have been commonplace in states and countries with mandatory age verification. If the language of these bills was fixed and narrowed down correctly, or were rewritten by First Amendment lawyers, they would have my support fully and the support of others. As it stands, however, these bills don't seem to have language that focuses on protecting children so much as it does criminalizing sexual material and expression while redefining obscenity. Please oppose, rewrite or amend and narrow down these laws.
