I need you to co-sponsor and vote yes on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, H.R. 14. The Supreme Court just finished what it started in 2013: Louisiana v. Callais gutted the last protection against racially discriminatory maps by requiring proof of intentional discrimination, the exact standard Congress rejected in 1982 because it makes discrimination nearly impossible to prove.
Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act helped restore democracy in majority-Black towns, brought Latinos onto city councils, and gave Native Americans state legislative representation. Justice Alito's majority opinion made it functionally unusable. Fair Fight Action estimates this ruling could flip 19 majority-minority seats to Republicans. NPR found it could lead to white candidates winning 15 House seats currently held by Black members of Congress.
Meanwhile, the Trump DOJ has gutted the Civil Rights Division, losing 250 lawyers and suspending all active voting rights investigations. Republican-controlled states are redrawing congressional maps mid-decade for the first time in modern history. Florida called a special session to flip four Democratic seats. Texas proposed adding five Republican-leaning districts.
H.R. 14 would restore the preclearance formula, reinstate effects-based Section 2 protections, and expand federal observer access. It passed the House twice before. Pass it now.
