Stop treating Dr. Fauci like a criminal and ignoring real criminals like Trump.

Anthony Fauci walked into a Senate hearing room on Wednesday, got sworn in, and then refused to answer a single question, invoking his Fifth Amendment right more than a hundred times in what turned into one of the strangest oversight hearings in recent memory. Senate Homeland Security Chairman Rand Paul, who has spent years trying to nail Fauci to the wall over covid origins and gain of function research, released over a thousand pages of Fauci's personal pandemic diary right before the hearing, hoping the entries would trip him up. Instead Fauci sat there, calm as ever, and read the same lawyer scripted line every time. Paul was livid, and afterward announced the committee will vote next week on holding Fauci in contempt of Congress. Rand Paul supplied the day's other big spectacle when he had Fauci's own attorney physically removed from the room. David Schertler kept trying to jump in and talk despite being told he was not recognized and had been instructed to sit in a different row. Paul finally had security haul him out while the gallery applauded, telling him flatly that this was how Fauci would be remembered, for a lawyer who would not follow the rules. It was a made for cable moment, chaotic and a little absurd, and it ended up overshadowing the actual substance of the hearing almost entirely. Wisconsin senator Ron Johnson, never one to pass up a chance to go after Fauci, tore into him over hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, insisting there had been plenty of evidence the drugs worked and accusing Fauci of sabotaging them to clear the way for the vaccines instead. The actual scientific consensus, built on large randomized trials, never found either drug effective against covid. Ohio senator Bernie Moreno went for the emotional gut punch, invoking a 2020 incident where an Ohio mom was tased at her son's football game over a mask mandate, then demanding to know who the hell Fauci thought he was. Left out of the story: she was tased for fighting the arresting officer, and the mask rule came from Ohio's own governor, not from Fauci. Here is the math nobody on that panel wants to talk about. Somewhere north of five billion people worldwide took a covid vaccine. If even one percent of them had died or suffered a major life altering reaction, we would be talking about tens of millions of deaths playing out in plain sight in every hospital in the country. That did not happen. The actual rate of serious adverse events tied to the vaccines is a tiny fraction of a percent, and the vaccines are credited with preventing millions of deaths, not causing them. None of that context made it into Wednesday's theater, but it should. Fauci spent decades in public service and was working with the best data available in real time against a brand new virus that killed over a million Americans, adjusting guidance as the science evolved because that is what good science actually looks like. That is not the profile of a criminal, it is the profile of a public servant doing an impossible job under a microscope. He deserves better than a stage managed hearing built to bait an 85 year old man into perjuring himself. He deserves recognition, not a contempt vote.
