Oppose any legislation that shields AI companies from liability for catastrophic harms. Illinois is currently considering SB 3444, which would let OpenAI and other AI labs off the hook when their models cause mass casualties or billions in property damage. This is a tech bro sleight of hand, and it's spreading.
You don't get to "replace" accountable humans for a profit, but then drop the "accountability" part. That is the most important part! If a company profits from replacing human judgment with AI systems, they don't get to walk away when those systems fail catastrophically. OpenAI wants protection from liability for scenarios where AI helps create bioweapons or causes the death of 100 or more people, as long as they published some reports on their website. Publishing paperwork shouldn't exempt anyone from responsibility for dead bodies.
Is this the world we want to live in? Really? We already have families suing OpenAI after children died by suicide following interactions with ChatGPT. Now the company wants blanket immunity for even worse outcomes.
If AI labs want the profits, they can handle the liability too. Reject any attempt to import Illinois-style liability shields here.
