Oppose Revision of Historical Information at National Park Sites

To: Rep. Kelly, Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Butler, PA

March 7

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to stop the Interior Department's plans to revise or remove historical information at national park sites across the country. According to documents leaked to the Washington Post on March 2, 2026, the administration is working to revise or remove information on African American history, LGBT rights, climate change, and other topics at hundreds of national park sites. Our national parks exist to preserve and educate the public about our nation's history, both its triumphs and its failures. Accurate historical information is essential for understanding where we came from and making informed decisions about our future. When the Interior Department dismisses these plans as merely "draft, deliberative internal documents," it ignores the fundamental threat this poses to historical integrity and public education. The administration has already begun dismantling exhibits on slavery and restoring Confederate statues at various sites. This pattern of erasing uncomfortable truths does not make America stronger. It weakens our ability to learn from the past and undermines the educational mission that Congress has entrusted to the National Park Service. The firing of Yosemite ranger Shannon Joslin for displaying a transgender pride flag on El Capitan on May 20, 2025, demonstrates how this campaign extends beyond historical exhibits to silencing current park employees. Joslin was terminated under regulations that had never been applied to similar conduct before, despite flag displays on El Capitan being common for various causes. I ask that you publicly oppose any efforts to revise accurate historical information at national park sites and introduce or support legislation that protects the historical integrity of information presented at federally managed sites. Our national parks belong to all Americans, and their educational content should reflect factual history, not political preferences. Please ensure that the National Park Service remains committed to truth and education rather than historical revisionism.
