I am writing to express my support for the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act and the SSI restoration act. People living on SSI are in an extremely precarious position, relying on support from the government that puts them far below the poverty level. They are unable to work, which means if a payment is late they are in danger of becoming homeless. They are not able to have anything resembling adequate savings, which means in a crisis (such as an accident, an eviction, or a surprise medical expense) they are not in a position to help themselves. These programs have not been updated to reflect the current financial realities of America today. They were barely adequate in the 70s, and they are horrifyingly inadequate today. People living on SSI need and deserve our help.
