This proposed "Laken Riley Act" is a deceptive piece of legislation that would undermine due process and enable widespread discrimination against immigrants, including those living in the country legally. It goes far beyond addressing undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes, allowing detention without charges or convictions based solely on arrests. Alarmingly, it would empower states to override federal immigration policies and judges to ban visas from entire countries, upending the separation of powers. Rather than promoting public safety through fair enforcement, this act enables harassment of immigrant communities and a severe curtailment of legal immigration avenues. It is antithetical to American values of justice and Equal Protection under the law. I urge you to reject this cruel and unconstitutional measure which exploits legitimate security concerns to advance an extremist anti-immigrant agenda. Real reform should protect civil liberties while securing borders through pragmatic, humane policies - not indiscriminate crackdowns that make all of us less safe. This Trojan horse bill must not become law.
