Demand Accountability for Federal Shooting in Minneapolis and End ICE Operations
To: Sen. Warren, Sen. Markey
From: A constituent in Brighton, MA
January 24
I am writing to demand immediate action following the federal agent shooting in Minneapolis on Saturday morning near 26th Street W and Nicollet Avenue. This incident, which left a man shot in the chest and hospitalized in unknown condition, represents an unacceptable escalation of federal law enforcement violence in our communities.
Governor Tim Walz spoke directly with the White House after this shooting, stating that Minnesota has had it and calling these operations sickening. He characterized the federal officers as violent and untrained, demanding their immediate removal from the state. I share his outrage and call on you to take concrete legislative action.
Video evidence shows a group of agents wrestling with a man on a city street before at least ten shots were fired. Regardless of the conflicting accounts about what transpired, the use of lethal force in our neighborhoods by federal agents operating with minimal oversight and accountability is unacceptable. These operations are terrorizing communities rather than protecting them.
I urge you to introduce or support legislation to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement and establish a full investigation into this shooting and similar incidents involving federal agents. Federal law enforcement personnel who use excessive force must face criminal prosecution, not administrative review. The current system allows agents to act with impunity, leading to what amounts to extrajudicial executions on our streets.
Additionally, I call on you to support immediate defunding of these federal operations in Minnesota and other states where local officials have explicitly rejected their presence. Governor Walz has made clear that these thousands of federal officers are not welcome. State sovereignty and community safety must take precedence over federal overreach.
I expect a response detailing what specific actions you will take to address this crisis and hold federal agents accountable for violence in our communities.
