Mandate Internet Access in Group Homes for People with Disabilities

To: Sen. Anthony, Rep. Witwer, Gov. Whitmer

From: A constituent in Potterville, MI

March 28

I need you to support legislation requiring all group homes to provide internet access to residents with disabilities. This is a basic rights issue that affects thousands of people who are being left behind in the digital age. According to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, a large percentage of group homes lack internet connectivity. For residents with limited transportation options, the internet is often their only connection to the outside world. Without it, they cannot communicate with family, access educational resources, apply for jobs, or advocate for themselves. This isolation makes an already vulnerable population even more dependent and disconnected. Digital inclusion is not a luxury anymore. Internet access is essential for employment opportunities, social services, and basic participation in modern society. People with disabilities deserve the same access to information and opportunities as everyone else. Requiring group homes to provide adequate internet infrastructure would be a meaningful step toward independence and self-sufficiency for residents who are working toward those goals every day. Make mandatory internet access in group homes a priority.
