Vote no on HR 1329 if it includes Rep. Mary Miller's discriminatory amendment. This bill was a bipartisan effort with over 200 cosponsors to finally give the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum a site on the National Mall. Miller's substitute turned it into a weapon to erase transgender women from history.
The amendment explicitly bans the museum from depicting "any biological male as female." That means no Sylvia Rivera or Marsha P. Johnson, who helped spark the Stonewall uprising. No Lynn Conway, the computer scientist whose microchip design work at Xerox enabled modern smartphones. No Congresswoman Sarah McBride. Trans women are women, and their contributions to American history are real and significant.
This follows a broader campaign to erase transgender people from federal recognition entirely. The National Park Service already removed trans women from the Stonewall National Monument website. The DOJ ordered the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to deadname missing trans kids. Thousands of government web pages have been scrubbed.
The museum has waited six years for a location. Don't let it become another tool of erasure. Restore the original bipartisan bill or vote no.
