I am writing to express my deep concern over the proposed provision in the congressional appropriations bill that would effectively shield pesticide manufacturers from lawsuits. This attempt to sneak corporate protections into unrelated legislation is not only unethical but also poses a significant threat to public health and our justice system.
The provision in question would block lawsuits against pesticide companies, particularly benefiting Bayer, which has faced over 100,000 lawsuits alleging its Roundup herbicide causes cancer. This move, spearheaded by the Modern Ag Alliance founded by Bayer, is a blatant attempt to evade accountability for potential harm caused by their products.
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose this provision and any similar language in both House and Senate appropriations bills, as well as the upcoming farm bill. The EPA's role in regulating product safety should not supersede the rights of individuals and local governments to seek justice or issue warnings about pesticide risks.
The Make America Healthy Again (Maha) movement, along with consumer advocates and legal experts, rightfully argue that removing the ability to sue pesticide manufacturers is both unconstitutional and un-American. It sets a dangerous precedent that prioritizes corporate interests over public health and safety.
I ask you to stand with the bipartisan opposition to this provision. Protect our right to hold corporations accountable and ensure that our legal system remains a recourse for those harmed by potentially dangerous products. Vote against any appropriations bill or farm bill that includes these pesticide liability shields.
The health of your constituents and the integrity of our legal system are at stake. Please act swiftly to prevent this provision from becoming law and maintain transparency in the legislative process. We need representatives who prioritize public safety over corporate profits.
