An Open Letter
To: Sen. Collins
From: A constituent in South Portland, ME
April 8
As an excuse for not holding town halls, your campaign spokesperson, Blake Kearney, is quoted in today’s Portland Press Herald having said: “town halls are often organized by partisan or dark money groups” and “(Collins) prefers smaller group meetings, rather than holding town halls where very few people get to speak, and the level of civility is often not that high,” she said.
I suspect it is also true that “very few people get to speak” in your preferred “smaller group meetings”. This approach suggests a limited interest in hearing from all Maine voters, particularly those who disagree with your actions as Senator.
Rather than limiting access, I urge you to hold open town halls and listen directly to the constituents you represent. You may find it valuable to engage with their perspectives.
