Please speak out publicly and take every available action to block the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's proposed revisions to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. On July 24, a board packed with 21 Trump appointees voted to advance changes that would gut the 60-year-old law's requirement that federal agencies consult with the public, local governments, and Tribal nations before acting on historic properties. Brent Leggs, CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, warned this would "eviscerate the preservation of our shared civic and cultural heritage." The stakes are concrete and enormous. More than 100,000 properties and 1.8 million sites, structures, and districts would lose protections — including, as former ACHP chair Sara Bronin noted, "significant cultural landscape features" like the Grand Canyon. Chaco Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 4,700 known archaeological sites, would be opened to oil and gas extraction, stripping Tribal governments of their legally guaranteed right to consultation. The revisions would also fast-track a triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery that ranking members of both chambers have called flatly illegal. This isn't bureaucratic housekeeping. It's the deliberate dismantling of the legal framework that protects our shared history from being bulldozed for private gain or political vanity.
