Oppose Undue Overreach on Non-Profits: Protect Civil Liberties
To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer
From: A constituent in Jamaica, NY
November 24
I urge you to oppose H.R. 9495, the Upholding New Pillars of Democracy Act, which would grant the executive branch unchecked power to unilaterally terminate non-profit organizations without due process. This bill poses a grave threat to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, including freedom of association and freedom of speech. Allowing any administration to arbitrarily dissolve civil society groups sets a dangerous precedent that undermines democratic values and could be weaponized against dissenting voices. I implore you to defend the vital role that non-profits play in our society by voting against this deeply troubling legislation that would concentrate immense authority in the hands of the President at the expense of citizens' civil liberties.
