Protect First Amendment Dissent from Weaponized "Domestic Extremism" Frameworks

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Bergman, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

May 27

I am writing to demand immediate legislative action to protect the First Amendment rights of American citizens from the dangerous expansion of federal "domestic terrorism" and "extremism" frameworks. Federal law enforcement, guided by directives like NSPM-7, has increasingly weaponized these designations to target peaceful, ideological dissent—explicitly labeling anti-capitalist, anti-corporate, and anti-technology political views as national security threats. Treating political speech as a law enforcement emergency is a blatant violation of civil liberties. This framework is being used as a shield for corporate interests, allowing federal surveillance and policing to protect private infrastructure—such as speculative tech data centers—from public scrutiny and peaceful protest. Furthermore, I am deeply concerned by joint efforts between law enforcement and the IRS to target nonprofit advocacy groups, civil rights organizations, and community networks. Labeling ideological dissent as "extremism" to strip organizations of tax-exempt status or freeze their funding is an abusive tactic designed to create a chilling effect and eliminate democratic oversight. I urge you to introduce and support legislation that: 1 Defunds Ideological Surveillance: Strip all federal funding from DOJ, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security programs that monitor, track, or investigate American citizens based on non-violent political ideologies, including anti-capitalist or anti-corporate beliefs. 2 Imposes Strict Statutory Guardrails: Pass explicit legislation prohibiting federal agencies from classifying peaceful civil disobedience, public protest, or political advocacy against corporate infrastructure as "domestic terrorism." 3 Protects Nonprofit Advocacy: Prohibit the IRS and federal law enforcement from coordinating to investigate or revoke the tax-exempt status of advocacy groups based on their political speech or ideological stances. The government’s job is to protect the constitutional rights of its citizens, not to act as a private security and compliance force for corporate entities. I expect you to defend the First Amendment and demand accountability from these agencies.
