Hold Trump Administration accountable for unlawful acts of war against Venezuela
To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree
From: A constituent in South Portland, ME
January 3
I am writing as a concerned citizen demanding that Congress take immediate action to hold the Trump administration accountable for its unlawful acts of war against Venezuela and the reported abduction of a foreign leader. These actions represent a grave violation of both international law and the United States Constitution.
Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution is unequivocal: only Congress has the power to declare war. The executive branch does not have unilateral authority to engage in military hostilities or carry out covert kidnappings that could incite conflict with a sovereign nation. Any such operations conducted without congressional authorization or transparent oversight are illegal, unconstitutional, and profoundly dangerous to the principles of representative democracy.
I urge you to use your oversight powers to investigate these acts, publicly condemn any unauthorized military aggression, and pursue legislation or resolutions reaffirming Congress’s sole constitutional authority to declare war. The erosion of this balance of power undermines our democracy and risks setting a precedent for unchecked executive militarism.
The American people deserve accountability, transparency, and leadership committed to upholding the rule of law — both at home and abroad. I call on you to stand up for constitutional governance and make clear that illegal acts of war will not be tolerated, regardless of who occupies the White House.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your prompt response and to seeing decisive congressional action that restores the authority of the people through their elected representatives.
