I am writing to urge you to support legislation that fully legalizes marijuana at the federal level and ensures permanent legal protections for CBD and THC products beyond the current timeline constraints.
President Trump's recent executive order reclassifying marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III is a meaningful step forward. This change acknowledges marijuana's accepted medical uses and lower potential for abuse, moving it to the same category as ketamine and anabolic steroids. The reclassification will ease research restrictions and provide significant tax relief to cannabis businesses operating in states that have already legalized the substance. Following the announcement, major marijuana stocks surged, with Tilray Brands jumping 6%, Aurora Cannabis rising 9%, and Canopy Growth Corporation spiking 11%, demonstrating strong market confidence in reduced federal restrictions.
However, Schedule III classification still falls short of what patients, businesses, and communities need. Marijuana remains federally restricted despite widespread state-level legalization and proven medical benefits for people suffering from chronic pain, seizure disorders, and other serious conditions. As the President noted at the signing, people in great pain have been begging for relief, particularly those seeking alternatives to addictive and potentially lethal opioid painkillers.
Full federal legalization would eliminate the remaining legal conflicts between state and federal law, provide certainty for medical patients who depend on cannabis treatments, and allow legitimate businesses to operate without fear of federal prosecution. Additionally, CBD and THC products face uncertain futures under current regulations with expiration timelines that threaten access for countless Americans who rely on these substances for medical relief.
I ask that you champion legislation to fully legalize marijuana at the federal level and establish permanent legal protections for CBD and THC products. Your constituents deserve consistent access to safe, legal cannabis products without arbitrary time restrictions or the threat of future prohibition.
