An Open Letter

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Langworthy, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Bath, NY

April 7

All of you need to call! I JUST called. Leave a message! What to say: I'm a constituent calling to urge you to use your authority to prevent unauthorized military action against Iran. A recent social media post from President Trump warned that "a whole civilization will die tonight" while celebrating the prospect of "Complete and Total Regime Change" in Iran. That kind of language, from a sitting president, is alarming -- and it reflects a pattern of unilateral escalation that bypasses Congress entirely. I'm asking you specifically to: 1. Assert Congress's sole constitutional authority to declare war (Article I, Section 2. Oppose any military strike on Iran without explicit congressional authorization 3. Support diplomatic engagement rather than threats of regime change . I also want to say directly, for the record: any military action taken without congressional authorization is illegal under U.S. and international law. Members of our armed forces are legally and morally obligated to refuse unlawful order. This is not a suggestion but a requirement of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the principles established at Nuremberg. "Following orders" is not a defense. Those who carry out illegal orders will be held accountable, by the American people and by the world.
