Federal immigration agents conducted enforcement operations at a school bus stop in Ypsilanti, targeting parents during student drop-off. According to Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia M. Dyer, ICE agents turned a routine morning into a scene of terror for families and children. This is unacceptable, and I am demanding that you take immediate action to stop it.
You must use every tool at your disposal to force ICE and CBP out of Ypsilanti and out of Michigan entirely. I expect you to publicly condemn these operations today, not next week or after careful consideration. Call a press conference. Issue a statement. Make it clear that Michigan will not tolerate federal agents terrorizing parents at school bus stops.
These enforcement tactics do not make our communities safer. They destroy the trust between local law enforcement and residents. When immigrant families fear any interaction with government authority, they stop reporting crimes and cooperating with investigations. Sheriff Dyer understands this, which is why she spoke out publicly. You need to stand with local law enforcement and against federal overreach that undermines their work.
Children are watching their parents get detained at school drop-offs. Families are too afraid to bring their kids to school. Teachers are managing traumatized students instead of educating them. This is happening in your state, under your watch, and your silence or measured response is inadequate.
I am not asking for a thoughtful statement about the complexity of immigration policy. I am demanding that you act immediately to end ICE and CBP operations targeting Michigan families. Work with other legislators to establish enforceable protections that bar federal agents from conducting enforcement at schools and sensitive community locations. Use your platform to make these operations politically untenable. Do your job and protect the people you represent from federal agencies that are terrorizing our communities.
