Vote NO on SAVE Act

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Barrett

From: A constituent in Lansing, MI

February 4

I am writing to urge you to **vote against the SAVE Act (sometimes referred to as SAVE 2.0)** and to oppose any effort to attach it to must-pass legislation. While election integrity is important, the SAVE Act would do far more harm than good by placing **unnecessary and exclusionary barriers** on eligible American voters. The bill would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, despite the fact that noncitizen voting is already illegal and extremely rare under existing law. Millions of eligible voters would be affected by these requirements. Most Americans do not have passports, and many lack immediate access to birth certificates or other qualifying documents. The burden would fall disproportionately on **older Americans, rural voters, low-income individuals, people with disabilities, servicemembers, and women who have changed their names**. These are law-abiding citizens who would face new obstacles simply to exercise a fundamental constitutional right. In practice, the SAVE Act would also undermine widely used and trusted registration methods such as **online and mail-in voter registration** and voter registration drives. Eliminating or restricting these tools would shrink participation without meaningfully improving election security. Senate leaders and voting-rights advocates have warned that this legislation functions as **voter suppression**, not voter protection. It imposes sweeping restrictions to address a problem that evidence shows is negligible, while risking the disenfranchisement of millions of eligible voters. Our democracy is strongest when elections are both secure and accessible. We should be pursuing reforms that protect election integrity **without making it harder for eligible citizens to vote**. For these reasons, I respectfully ask you to **vote NO on the SAVE Act** and oppose its inclusion in any larger legislative package.
