Oppose Trump's Religious Liberty Commission and Defend Church-State Separation
To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Casar, Sen. Cornyn
From: A constituent in Manor, TX
June 27
Oppose Trump's Religious Liberty Commission at every turn. This panel is not about protecting religious freedom — it's a coordinated effort to dismantle the constitutional wall between church and state, and the precedent for that wall goes back to the founding of this country.
Commission Chair Dan Patrick has publicly called church-state separation "a lie" and proposed a federal hotline to broadcast that claim. The commission's recommendations would post Ten Commandments in public schools, funnel federal money to religious organizations free from civil rights requirements, and carve out religious exemptions from healthcare mandates and labor laws. These aren't fringe ideas — they were presented at an official April meeting with virtually no internal dissent. The Interfaith Alliance has already filed a lawsuit arguing the commission violates federal law by excluding diverse religious viewpoints, and the Trump administration is trying to get it thrown out on technicalities rather than defend the commission's legitimacy on the merits.
No single religion should set the terms for how this country governs itself. Fight this commission, support the legal challenges against it, and make clear that the First Amendment protects all Americans — not just those whose faith aligns with this administration's preferences.
