I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed budget cuts to NASA, particularly those affecting our nation's ability to monitor space weather and conduct innovative scientific research. Space weather monitoring is crucial for protecting technological infrastructure and ensuring the safety of human space travelers. Satellites such as the Wind spacecraft, Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Solar Orbiter are essential for observing solar activity and predicting its effects on Earth and in space. The data these satellites provide are indispensable for safeguarding communication networks, GPS systems, power grids, air travel, and astronaut safety from solar storms and related phenomena. The Wind and ACR spacecraft are critical in measuring the solar wind, while Solar Orbiter offers unprecedented close-up observations of the Sun, enabling early warnings of geomagnetic storms that can disrupt our daily lives and technology. Moreover, these programs contribute to fundamental astrophysical research, fostering technological advancements with significant economic benefits. These budget cuts would also negatively impact Michigan's economy. Our state is positioning itself as a hub for the aerospace and space technology industries. NASA's space weather monitoring programs, enhanced by Solar Orbiter's contributions, inspire local innovation. Disruptions to these programs could deter investment and slow our progress in the space industry. NASA's achievements are a testament to American ingenuity. By ensuring adequate funding for NASA's programs, including Wind, ACE, and Solar Orbiter, we maintain global leadership in space exploration while fostering innovation and economic growth in Michigan. I urge you to advocate for preserving and enhancing funding for these critical NASA programs. Our future in space, resilience on Earth, and Michigan's economic development depend on it. Thank you for considering this pressing issue. I am hopeful for your support and leadership in ensuring the continued prosperity of our nation's scientific endeavors.
