I’m writing as a constituent deeply concerned about the Kids Online Safety Act and the package of child online safety bills moving through Congress. I absolutely want kids to be safe online and I want parents to have the tools to protect their children. But the current version of KOSA doesn’t do that — it creates broad federal ceilings that stop states from doing more to protect their residents, and it risks undermining existing privacy and product safety laws that families already rely on. We’ve all seen how fast technology changes and how quickly new harms show up. But shutting down state-level protections and letting massive platforms off the hook is not the answer. KOSA in its current form stops states from going further, weakens accountability, and shifts responsibility onto already overwhelmed parents without making platforms actually safer. It lets tech companies off the hook for the ways they design systems that maximize engagement at the expense of real human wellbeing. I’m worried that instead of protecting kids, this bill will leave the most vulnerable without meaningful safeguards, and it could end up giving big tech even more control over what people see and how their data is used. I want real solutions that protect privacy, strengthen safety, and hold companies accountable without limiting free speech or wiping out stronger state protections. Please vote NO on KOSA as currently written and work with your colleagues to strengthen online safety in ways that actually protect children and families without sacrificing privacy, innovation, or state rights.
