I am writing to demand the codification of a fundamental right for all citizens—regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity—to deny being drafted into military service.
Recent legislative changes, including the move toward automatic Selective Service registration in the FY2026 NDAA, threaten the bodily autonomy of our citizens. I urge you to support legislation that:
1 Establishes an Absolute Right of Refusal: Every person, including men, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals of all ages, must have the legal right to decline conscription based on personal, moral, or ethical grounds without facing felony charges or loss of federal benefits.
2 Protects LGBTQIA+ and Gender-Diverse Individuals:Ensure that draft policies do not discriminate against or disproportionately target the LGBTQIA+ community, and that their right to refuse service is explicitly protected.
3 Ends Mandatory Registration:Shift the Selective Service System to a 100% voluntary registration model, respecting the principle that service to one's country should be a choice, not a mandate.
4 Expands Conscientious Objector Protections: Simplify the process for declaring conscientious objection so it is accessible to all, not just those with specific religious affiliations, and ensure it can be declared at any time.
No citizen should be forced to participate in state-sanctioned violence against their will. I ask you to prioritize the protection of individual conscience over military expansion.
