Postal banking for financial inclusion, support underserved communities

To: Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin, Rep. Krishnamoorthi

A public banking option through the U.S. Postal Service could provide affordable financial services to underserved communities. As Senator Elizabeth Warren highlighted, the Postal Service Office of Inspector General's report found that offering basic services like bill paying, check cashing and small loans could assist underbanked Americans while bolstering USPS finances. With its widespread locations, the Postal Service is well-positioned to increase access to banking for those who have been left out of the mainstream financial system by high fees and minimum balance requirements at traditional banks. I urge you to consider the benefits postal banking could bring in serving the unbanked and driving more financial inclusion across the country.
