I am writing to urge you to take meaningful action to reform Texas’s redistricting process by supporting legislation that establishes an independent, third-party commission to draw district lines. The current system, which allows legislators to shape their own districts, undermines fair representation and erodes public trust in our democracy.
Historically, Texas has faced numerous legal challenges over its redistricting maps, including rulings from federal courts that found districts were drawn in ways that diluted the voting power of minority communities. These patterns of partisan and racial gerrymandering have not only led to costly legal battles but have also contributed to political polarization and uncompetitive elections. When politicians draw their own districts, they prioritize party advantage over the will of the voters.
A solution to this problem exists: independent redistricting commissions. States such as California, Arizona, and Michigan have successfully implemented independent redistricting commissions that prioritize fair representation over partisan interests. These commissions—comprised of nonpartisan experts and citizen representatives—ensure transparency, public participation, and, most importantly, fairer electoral maps. Texas can and should follow suit.
By supporting independent redistricting reform, you would be taking a vital step toward restoring public confidence in our electoral system. Competitive elections encourage accountability, increased voter engagement, and more responsive governance. Fair maps are not a partisan issue—they are a fundamental principle of democracy.
I urge you to introduce or support legislation that establishes an independent redistricting commission in Texas. Our state’s future depends on a fair, transparent, and representative democracy. Please let me know your position on this issue and how you plan to address it in the next legislative session.
Thank you for your time and service to our state. I look forward to your response.
