HB 4588 is poised for a second reading in the Elections Committee. This bill would require that anyone running for a local school board would have to declare a party affiliation, run in the August partisan primary, and place school board elections in the partisan section of the November ballot. I cannot think of one thing which would be improved for our schools or our communities, by injecting partisan politics into school board elections and school board functioning. The only voices influencing school board elections and school board functioning should be those of members of the community.
If this bill makes it out of committee, I hope Rep. Schriver will vote against it on the house floor. If it should make it to the state senate, I hope we can count on Senator Johnson’s nay vote.
Thank you.
