Preserve independence of regulatory agencies and checks on power

To: Sen. Duckworth, Rep. Krishnamoorthi, Sen. Durbin

From: A constituent in Des Plaines, IL

February 24

This executive order represents a concerning overreach of executive power that undermines the system of checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution. Independent agencies were intentionally designed to operate outside of direct presidential control to insulate them from undue political influence and ensure objective, evidence-based policymaking. Subjecting these agencies to White House review and adjusting their funding based on alignment with the president's agenda threatens their independence and nonpartisan nature. Concentrating so much regulatory authority under the president erodes institutional safeguards against abuse of power. For the integrity of our democratic institutions and the proper functioning of the regulatory process, this order must be challenged. It is a disturbing move towards excessive executive control over areas that should remain free from partisan politics and shortsighted partisan agendas. Maintaining the independence of regulatory agencies is crucial for promoting the public interest over narrow political interests. I urge you to take action to protect these vital safeguards and block implementation of this unconstitutional order.
