Dear Senator Capito, I am a West Virginian and a constituent. Right now, families across our state are being forced to choose between food, medicine, and keeping a roof over their heads because Congress has not done its job. This is unacceptable. I am writing to demand immediate, concrete action on three urgent priorities: 1. Restore healthcare subsidies now. Millions of Americans rely on premium tax credits and marketplace subsidies to keep health coverage affordable. Cutting or withholding those subsidies forces people — including seniors, parents, and people with chronic conditions — to go without necessary care. Please publicly commit to restoring and protecting these subsidies immediately. 2. Fully fund SNAP and other nutrition programs. SNAP is not a political talking point; it’s basic food assistance for seniors, families with children, and West Virginians living paycheck to paycheck. You have repeatedly said you care about families and children — do everything in your power to ensure SNAP funding is continued without delay or partisan riders that punish the people who can least afford it. 3. Stop using families as political hostages. Weaponizing the federal budget to force unrelated policy wins is unethical and destructive. If you and your colleagues continue to allow governing-by-shutdown, you will be accountable at the ballot box. West Virginians remember who chose partisan brinksmanship over feeding their neighbors. Senator, words of sympathy ring hollow when bills go unpaid and shelves go bare. We need actions — votes and leadership — not PR statements. I urge you to call for a clean, immediate funding measure that restores subsidies and funds SNAP now, then negotiate policy differences outside of hostage situations that put people’s lives at risk.
