Illinois has one of the most robust library sharing and delivery systems in the United States. The system allows school, public, academic, and medical libraries to share books and media across the state. In 2019, over 13 million items were delivered. Delivery runs 5 days a week, quickly moving books across the state. Books on writing business plans are sent to new entrepreneurs. Patients with rare conditions quickly receive books on their diagnosis. Large print books get to readers that need them. University students get the books they need from public and private institutions across the state. The system works, and it works well.
This amazing cost-saving program is made possible by IMLS fund to the Illinois State library.
If the executive order on IMLS is carried out, IMLS funding will run out at the end of September.
The Illinois Library Delivery Service depends on federal funds. I urge you to vote to allocate federal funds and federal administrative structures to keep the Illinois Library Delivery Service up and running.
