I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act currently being considered in the Senate. While the intention behind this legislation may be to ensure electoral integrity, the proposed measures would instead disenfranchise millions of eligible voters and undermine democratic principles.
The SAVE Act imposes strict requirements for voter registration, mandating documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. This poses a significant barrier, particularly for vulnerable populations, including low-income individuals, minorities, and the elderly, many of whom may not have access to the required documents such as passports or birth certificates. In fact, research indicates that over 21 million Americans could be affected, potentially excluding them from participating in our democracy.
Furthermore, eliminating online voter registration and imposing additional regulations on local election officials could lead to confusion and delays, further complicating an already challenging registration process. We should be striving to make voting more accessible, not more complicated.
I urge you to prioritize the voices of your constituents and oppose the SAVE Act. Instead of burdensome requirements, let’s work together to enhance voter participation and protect the rights of all citizens to have their voices heard at the ballot box.
