An Open Letter
To: Rep. Gillen
From: A verified voter in Floral Park, NY
January 24
I am writing to express my profound disgust with your recent vote to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This is not a matter of partisan disagreement. ICE has been repeatedly cited by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General, the Department of Justice, and civil rights organizations such as the ACLU for systemic abuses, including denial of medical care, violations of due process, wrongful detention of U.S. citizens, and a pattern of deaths in custody. These findings are well documented and publicly available.
Funding ICE is not a neutral act. It is an affirmative choice to sustain an agency that terrorizes immigrant communities, separates families, and operates with a level of impunity that should alarm anyone who claims to support democratic values and human rights. At a moment when authoritarian practices are openly expanding in this country, elected officials should be speaking out with clarity and courage. Your vote signals the opposite.
I am appalled that you chose political safety over moral leadership. Silence and accommodation in the face of documented abuse are not pragmatism. They are complicity.
As your constituent, I expect you to protect people from state violence, not help finance it. This vote makes clear that you are willing to ignore overwhelming evidence of harm rather than take a principled stand.
You have lost my vote.
Do better.
