I am writing to urge you to support invoking the 25th Amendment to address serious concerns about President Trump's cognitive fitness to serve. His recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday has intensified these concerns among members of Congress and the public.
During the Davos address, President Trump confused Greenland with Iceland and exhibited speech patterns and physical presentation that alarmed observers. Independent journalist Brian Allen noted Trump was slurring his words, writing that this represents "cognitive decline in real time with nuclear codes attached." Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey and Arizona Representative Yassamin Ansari have already called for invoking the 25th Amendment this week.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated on Wednesday that "the president has been acting in increasingly erratic ways" and noted the stark contrast in media coverage compared to concerns previously raised about President Biden. This double standard is particularly troubling given Trump's own frequent criticism of Biden's cognitive abilities during the previous administration.
The 25th Amendment exists precisely for situations where a president may no longer be able to discharge the powers and duties of the office. Congressional candidate George Conway referenced proposed legislation that would create an independent body to make this determination, stating "We have to do that. It's one of the many things we have to do if this country is to survive."
The stakes are too high to ignore these warning signs. A president with diminished cognitive capacity poses risks to national security, diplomatic relations, and the stability of our government. I urge you to publicly call for the Cabinet and Vice President Vance to fulfill their constitutional duty by invoking the 25th Amendment and to support legislation establishing an independent mechanism for evaluating presidential fitness for office.
