I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my deep outrage over the wrongful deportation and continued detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was illegally removed from the United States in March 2025 despite a standing court order prohibiting his deportation due to credible fears of persecution in El Salvador.
Mr. Abrego Garcia, who has lived and worked legally in the U.S. since 2019 under a “withholding of removal” status, was mistakenly deported by ICE in what the Trump administration has termed an “administrative error.” He is now imprisoned in El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a facility notorious for human rights abuses, despite having no criminal convictions in either country. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled on April 10 that his deportation was illegal and ordered the administration to “facilitate” his release. However, the administration has defied this order, arguing that it lacks the authority to compel El Salvador to act.
During a meeting on April 14, President Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele both refused to take responsibility for Mr. Abrego Garcia’s return. President Bukele dismissed the idea of returning him as “preposterous,” while President Trump suggested building more prisons in El Salvador to detain “homegrown” criminals from the U.S.
This situation is a blatant violation of judicial authority and human rights. It sets a dangerous precedent where individuals can be unlawfully deported and detained without due process, and where court orders are openly disregarded by the executive branch.
I urge you to take immediate action by:
1. Initiating a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Abrego Garcia’s wrongful deportation and the administration’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s order.
2. Holding accountable those responsible for this miscarriage of justice, including considering impeachment proceedings if warranted.
3. Advocating for the immediate repatriation of Mr. Abrego Garcia to reunite him with his family and restore his legal status.
4. Reviewing and reforming immigration enforcement policies to prevent such egregious errors in the future.
The integrity of our legal system and the protection of human rights must be upheld. I trust you will act decisively to address this grave injustice.
