I am writing to you today as one of your constituents to express my strong opposition to the administration’s recent announcement regarding a new oil and gas lease sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), currently scheduled for June 5, 2026. The Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge is one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in North America. It serves as a vital calving ground for the Porcupine Caribou Herd and a critical denning habitat for polar bears—species that are already under immense pressure due to a rapidly changing climate. Furthermore, this land is considered sacred to the Gwich’in people, who depend on the health of the caribou for their food security and cultural survival. History has shown that there is limited industry appetite for these leases. Previous auctions have seen major oil companies decline to participate, resulting in little economic gain for the taxpayer while creating massive legal and environmental liabilities. Proceeding with another auction despite ongoing litigation and clear public opposition is a short-sighted move that prioritizes the interests of fossil fuel lobbyists over the long-term health of our planet and the rights of Indigenous communities. As my representative in Washington, I urge you to: 1 Publicly oppose the June 5, 2026, lease sale. 2 Support legislation that would permanently protect the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from industrial development. 3 Inquire with the Department of the Interior regarding the environmental review process and the weighing of Indigenous concerns. The Arctic Refuge belongs to all Americans and future generations. It is far too precious to be sacrificed for speculative oil interests. I look forward to hearing your position on this critical issue and learning how you intend to protect this irreplaceable wilderness.
