Commemorate the Nakba

To: Sen. Johnson, Pres. Trump, Sen. Baldwin, Rep. Wied

From: A constituent in Appleton, WI

May 16

Today, we commemorate the Nakba, or the beginning of the Zionist expulsion of Palestinians in 1948 to pave the way for the creation of Israel. Oftentimes, we seem to portray this conflict as being between two groups of people who just couldn’t agree to share the land. This isn’t the case. In 1947, the UN adopted a Partition Plan that put 55% of Palestine under Zionist control, aiming to create a Jewish ethnostate (Israel). However, Zionists only actually owned 5% of the land, and this plan required many Palestinians to leave their homes. Understandably, the Palestinians (who weren’t allowed to participate in the creation of this plan) rejected it. In response, Zionist militias (backed by the Western Powers), began to drive Palestinians out anyway, killing many or forcing others to become refugees. This is the Nakba. The Nakba continues today. Look at the plans for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. It’s just a continuation of this process. Please, look at the history, and do not allow this tragedy to continue. Support an arms embargo on Israel. End our support of the blockade. And reject any proposals that involve the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians or U.S. control over Gaza.
