Ban the Privatization of Uranium Enrichment and Public Nuclear Infrastructure

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Bergman

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

May 27

I am writing to demand urgent legislative action to halt the dangerous privatization of the United States' nuclear fuel supply chain and uranium enrichment infrastructure. The Department of Energy’s recent allocation of nearly a billion dollars in federal funding to venture-capital-backed startups—such as General Matter—signals a terrifying shift toward allowing private billionaires and Silicon Valley tech conglomerates to control the foundational elements of nuclear energy. Uranium enrichment and advanced nuclear fuel development (including HALEU) are matters of profound national security, public safety, and environmental survival. Allowing private, for-profit entities to monopolize these resources—solely to power energy-hungry, speculative AI data centers—subverts public interest for private gain. We cannot allow the building blocks of atomic energy to be traded on the private market or controlled by corporate boards answer to private billionaires instead of the American public. I urge you to sponsor and introduce legislation that establishes the following mandates: 1 Codify Uranium Enrichment as an Exclusive Government Asset: Amend the Atomic Energy Act to explicitly bar private corporations from owning or operating commercial uranium enrichment facilities. Re-establish all domestic enrichment operations under exclusive state ownership and public control. 2 Ban Venture Capital and Private Equity from Nuclear Fuel Logistics: Legally prohibit private equity firms, venture capitalists, and foreign corporate entities from investing in, sitting on the boards of, or controlling domestic nuclear fuel production, transportation, and storage infrastructure. 3 Prioritize the Public Grid Over Private Tech Monopolies: Mandate that any federally supported nuclear energy generation or fuel processing serve the public utility grid first, making it illegal to divert nuclear infrastructure for the exclusive, private use of corporate tech data centers. Nuclear technology belongs in the hands of public servants bound by democratic accountability, not billionaires seeking private energy empires. I expect you to act immediately to defend our public resources.
