The idea of creating so-called "freedom cities" exempt from federal regulations raises significant concerns. Deregulating sectors like biotechnology, nuclear energy, and construction could endanger public health, safety, and the environment. Allowing companies to bypass agencies like the FDA, NRC, and EPA risks exposing Americans to unacceptable risks from untested products and procedures. Furthermore, establishing cities outside the democratic process and rule of law sets a disturbing precedent. These "freedom cities" would concentrate power in the hands of wealthy corporations and individuals with no accountability to residents. Workers could be stripped of rights and protections. Rather than enabling this deregulatory race to the bottom, I urge you to uphold robust standards that safeguard the public interest. Regulations play a vital role in fostering innovation responsibly while mitigating potential harms. Exempting entire cities from federal oversight threatens to undermine progress made in areas like environmental protection, consumer safety, and labor rights. I encourage you to reject any proposals for these undemocratic "freedom cities" and instead work to strengthen the institutions that make America's cities livable for all.
