Protect free speech on campus, don't defund protests

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Weber, Pres. Trump

From: A verified voter in Galveston, TX

March 4

Cutting federal funding from schools that allow peaceful protests infringes on the constitutional right to free speech. A core tenet of democracy is the ability to voice dissent without fear of government retaliation. Protests play a vital role in society by allowing people to raise awareness of important issues and demand change. While disruptive or illegal protests should be addressed appropriately, an outright ban on campus protests overreaches and risks stifling free expression and the free exchange of ideas that universities are meant to promote. Reconsidering this policy is urged, as it poses a danger to fundamental American values of free speech and open discourse.
