Protecting Kids or Controlling the Narrative? Apply SB 13 Fairly—Ban the Bible

To: Rep. Dean, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Gov. Abbott, Sen. Hughes

From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX

March 16

I am writing to formally request a review of the Bible under the provisions of Senate Bill 13 (SB 13) to determine whether it should be removed from Texas school libraries based on its content. SB 13 mandates the prohibition of books containing “indecent content or profane content” and shifts decision-making authority over school library materials to school boards and parental advisory councils. If this law is being applied fairly and consistently, then the Bible—which contains numerous passages depicting sexual violence, incest, extreme violence, genocide, slavery, and graphic language—should also be subject to removal. Below are just a few examples of content within the Bible that violates the standards outlined in SB 13: Sexual Content & Incest • Genesis 19:30-36 – Lot’s daughters intoxicate their father and engage in incestuous relations with him. • Ezekiel 23:19-21 – A highly explicit passage detailing a woman’s sexual desires and actions in graphic terms. • Song of Solomon 7:7-8 – Erotic descriptions of breasts and physical passion. Rape & Sexual Violence • Judges 19:22-30 – A woman is gang-raped, left for dead, and dismembered into twelve pieces. • 2 Samuel 13:10-14 – Amnon rapes his sister Tamar. • Numbers 31:17-18 – Moses commands his army to kill all men and non-virgin women but take the young virgin girls as captives. Extreme Violence & Genocide • 1 Samuel 15:3 – Commands the slaughter of all Amalekites, including “men, women, children, and infants.” • Deuteronomy 20:16-17 – Instructs Israelites to exterminate entire nations. • Psalm 137:9 – Speaks of dashing infants against rocks. Slavery & Human Trafficking • Exodus 21:2-7 – Outlines the rules for owning Hebrew slaves. • Leviticus 25:44-46 – Allows permanent ownership of foreign slaves. • Ephesians 6:5 – Encourages slaves to obey their masters. Profane & Disturbing Language • Ezekiel 23:20 – Graphic comparison of sexual lust to donkey genitals and horse emissions. • Isaiah 36:12 – References eating human excrement and drinking urine. These passages clearly violate SB 13’s prohibition on books with “indecent” or “grossly offensive” content. If the goal of this law is truly to protect students from inappropriate material rather than selectively banning books based on ideology, then the Bible must be subject to the same scrutiny as other books that have already been removed from Texas schools. Therefore, I respectfully request the following: 1. A formal review of the Bible under SB 13’s guidelines. 2. Consistent enforcement of the law by applying the same standards to all books, regardless of religious or historical significance. 3. A public statement clarifying how Texas intends to fairly enforce SB 13 without bias or selective censorship. If SB 13 is not applied fairly, then this legislation is not about protecting children—it is about controlling narratives.
