Block Federal Coercion of State Election Administration

To: Rep. Thompson, Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A constituent in Lewisburg, PA

July 9

Fight back against the Trump administration's attempt to hijack state election systems through illegal funding coercion. The administration is threatening to strip 20% of DHS homeland security grants — funds states depend on to prevent terrorism and prepare for disasters — unless states surrender control of how they run elections. That's not election security. That's extortion. The mandates themselves are deeply flawed. The SAVE database the administration wants states to use for voter roll verification is known to produce false matches that could wrongly purge eligible voters. Transitioning away from electronic voting systems would cost states billions nationwide — $66 million in Georgia alone, according to Republican Secretary of State Raffensperger. The Constitution gives states authority over election administration, and courts have consistently found the president has no power to force these changes unilaterally. Congress needs to act now. Block any attempt to attach these election mandates to homeland security grant conditions, and make clear that disaster preparedness and counterterrorism funding cannot be weaponized to override state election law. Legal experts expect courts to strike this down, but we shouldn't wait for litigation to protect democracy. Stand up for the constitutional separation of powers and stop this administration from using federal dollars to rewrite how Americans vote.
