Stop Hypocritical and Asinine Bailouts!

I write as a constituent concerned about the recently reported plan by the Trump Administration to provide billions of dollars in bailout assistance to U.S. farmers, allegedly to offset the adverse effects of his own tariff and trade policies. I find this proposal deeply troubling and want to respectfully encourage you to scrutinize it closely and advocate for a more coherent, sustainable approach. Why the proposed bailout is unacceptable 1. Accountability – Farmers are suffering in part because of policies that created the problem (tariffs, export retaliation, input cost increases). It is unfair to shift the burden of the harm and then call it “relief” without addressing root causes. 2. Precedent and moral hazard – The first term of the Trump Administration already used this model: large direct payments after trade damage, unevenly distributed and with little long-term market correction. A second large bailout risks embedding expectations of always-on federal rescue rather than restoration of robust markets. 3. Misallocation of resources – If the government uses tariff revenue (which itself raises costs for farmers and consumers) to fund a bailout, the net effect may simply be shifting costs rather than creating lasting value or trade competitiveness. 4. Opportunity cost – Funds directed toward bailouts cannot simultaneously be used for programs that rebuild export markets, invest in agricultural innovation, or strengthen supply-chains. 5. Equity issues – Previous bailouts disproportionately aided large farms compared to smaller operations, and did not necessarily rectify trade-injury patterns or ensure transparency. Our farmers deserve strong markets, stable policy environments, and fair access—not the constant prospect of bailouts to patch government-created damage. A bailout planned because of self-inflicted trade disruptions is fundamentally unjust and sets a poor policy precedent. I ask that you stand for accountability, transparency, and long‐term agricultural health when this matter comes before Congress.
