Protect Due Process, Reject Unilateral Treasury Powers on Non-Profits

To: Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth, Rep. Budzinski

From: A constituent in Collinsville, IL

November 19

This proposed legislation, H.R. 9495, raises significant concerns about due process and First Amendment rights. Granting the Treasury Department unilateral authority to designate non-profit organizations as "terrorist supporting" and strip their tax-exempt status without proper oversight or justification is highly problematic. Such sweeping powers could easily be misused to target legitimate human rights groups, civil liberties advocates, academic institutions, and other organizations engaged in lawful activities. The low bar of a simple majority for passage, coupled with previous bipartisan support, increases the risk of this bill becoming law, potentially through attachment to must-pass legislation. I urge you to change your vote and vote NO on this legislation.
