It is my understanding that Senate Bill 121 advanced earlier today redraws Louisiana’s 6th congressional district to become an all white district calling into question fair representation of black voters who previously voted from that district some of whom have already cast votes in a current election. Please correct me if I don’t have the details right or if I’ve been misinformed.
The notion of making such a change so close to an election is utterly ridiculous and unacceptable. If any of this is true, please vote no to the bill.
Although this is a matter for the Senate, I’m copying Congressman Mannion because I want him to know his constituents are watching what goes on on Capital Hill. Congressman Mannion I ask you to use the influence you’ve gained with senate members you’ve come to know to express my outrage and persuade them to make a rational vote.
It’s too close to election time to redraw Congressional District boundaries. Republicans and Democrats alike have had their chance at that game. At this time some people have already voted. The only way to respect their vote is to cease all gerrymandering.
If this or any other changes go through after people have spent their time and money campaigning in a district and some voters have already cast their votes, our entire voting system is badly violated.
There should be constitutional safeguard that prevent redrawing district lines for at least one year, maybe more, before an election. If there isn’t, I ask you all to work on this type of law to protect our votes.
Both parties have used gerrymandering to hurt the other party. Therefore it should be a bipartisan no brainer to carefully regulate redrawing of district boundaries.
I’ll have more to say about fair districting at a later time. For now, please focus on stopping Louisiana’s efforts to defile our election. Stop Senate Bill 121 dead in its tracks.
Thank you for your work on the Hill.
