An Open Letter

To: Sen. Blackburn, Rep. Kustoff, Sen. Hagerty

From: A constituent in Dyersburg, TN

November 21

Condemnation of Inflammatory Rhetoric and the Dangerous Lack of Accountability I am writing to you as a constituent deeply concerned about the erosion of our political discourse and the dangerous escalation of violent rhetoric, particularly from the highest levels of political leadership. I urge you to publicly and unequivocally condemn the recent remarks made by former President Donald Trump, which have been widely interpreted as a call for violence against political opponents. The normalization of such language is a direct threat to the safety of elected officials, the integrity of our democratic institutions, and the very rule of law. What I find particularly alarming is the stark hypocrisy that often accompanies these incidents. There is a frequent and forceful narrative from certain political figures and media outlets condemning "the left's violent rhetoric." While all violent language from any political quarter should be condemned, this criticism is rarely, if ever, applied with the same vigor to their own side. There is a consistent pattern: a prominent figure uses language that incites violence or threatens political opponents, and the response from their allies is either a defensive dismissal, a justification, or a complete refusal to hold the speaker accountable. This creates a dangerous double standard where one side is held to account for its words, while the other is given a pass for even more egregious statements. This lack of accountability is not a partisan issue; it is a democratic one. When leaders can imply violence against their opponents without consequence, it emboldens others and coarsens our entire political culture. It undermines the foundational principle that in a democracy, we debate, we vote, and we hold our opponents to account through the law—not through threats and intimidation. I call on you to: 1. Publicly condemn the recent inflammatory remarks made by former President Trump and other political figures that threaten the safety of elected officials and the peaceful transfer of power. 2. Speak out against this dangerous double standard and call for accountability for violent rhetoric, regardless of the political party it comes from. 3. Use your platform to champion a return to a political discourse grounded in facts, respect, and the rejection of violence in all its forms. The integrity of our democracy depends on our leaders having the courage to name and condemn threats, no matter their source. I am counting on you to demonstrate that courage. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your response.
