Demand for Action After Catholic Hospital Blocks Legal Sterilization Surgery I am writing to express my profound outrage and demand legislative action following the disturbing incident at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville, where a woman was prepped for a voluntary sterilization surgery—with an IV already placed—only to have hospital administrators cancel the procedure based on Catholic religious doctrine. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, sought sterilization for deeply personal and medically sound reasons: a history of assault, complications with other forms of birth control, and profound concern about living in a state where abortion is now banned. She scheduled a salpingectomy, paid for it in advance, and arrived prepared. Then she was left waiting for three hours while administrators overrode her doctor's medical judgment to protect her "sacred fertility." This was not a medical decision. It was the imposition of Catholic theology on a patient who does not share that faith. The hospital's directives come not from medical professionals but from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which forbids contraception and sterilization regardless of a patient's health, circumstances, or wishes. Catholic hospitals now control more than 30% of hospital births nationwide and operate over 1,100 hospitals across the country, including many in Tennessee. As their presence grows, so does the risk that patients will have essential, legal healthcare denied based on religious dogma. The people most harmed are those with limited options: low-income individuals, those in emergencies, and anyone whose insurance limits them to Catholic facilities. This incident reveals a dangerous gap in patient protections. Tennesseans deserve to know, before they schedule care, what procedures a hospital will refuse to provide. They should not discover these restrictions only after they have been prepped for surgery. I demand that you take the following actions: 1. Hold hearings to investigate this incident and the broader impact of religiously motivated denials of care in Tennessee hospitals. 2. Introduce and support legislation requiring all hospitals, including religiously affiliated institutions, to publicly disclose clear, detailed lists of all procedures they refuse to perform based on religious or moral objections. 3. Ensure that patients have the right to receive timely, legal medical care without having their personal healthcare decisions overridden by institutional religious doctrine. In a state that already ranks among the worst for maternal mortality and has banned abortion, we cannot allow women to be denied the legal healthcare they have chosen for themselves. The people with power in Tennessee must stop forcing their beliefs onto patients and start protecting the rights and health of all Tennesseans.
