I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to restore constitutional protections that are being systematically violated by the current administration. Recent events demonstrate a pattern of executive overreach that threatens the foundational principles of our democracy.
On January 31, 2026, U.S. District Judge Fred Biery was forced to order the release of five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his asylum-seeker father Adrian Conejo Arias from detention, writing that U.S. officials are ignoring the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Judge Biery stated that "for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency. And the rule of law be damned." When a federal judge must invoke such language to compel basic constitutional compliance, we have crossed a dangerous threshold.
Federal agents recently tear-gassed peaceful protesters, including children, in Portland, Oregon. Portland city councillor Mitch Green reported being tear-gassed along with thousands of union members and their families outside an ICE facility. The use of chemical weapons against American citizens exercising their First Amendment rights is unconscionable and unconstitutional.
The corruption extends beyond civil liberties violations. A Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that four days before the 2025 inauguration, men working for an Abu Dhabi royal signed a secret deal to buy 49% of the Trump family's cryptocurrency venture World Liberty Financial for $187 million. The deal was backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who oversees over $1.3 trillion and wants access to U.S. AI technology. In exchange, the administration committed to allowing the UAE to buy about half a million advanced AI chips annually. This represents a direct conflict of interest where family financial gain dictates foreign policy.
I urge you to support congressional investigations into these constitutional violations, co-sponsor legislation to restore checks and balances, and publicly condemn the use of force against peaceful protesters. Our democracy depends on elected officials who will defend the rule of law.
